One of my personal favourite beaches to visit, is Ballyheigue in the beautiful county of Kerry right here in Ireland.

Where is Ballyheigue Beach?

Tucked along the rugged coastline of County Kerry, Ballyheigue beach is one of those rare places that feels both untouched and welcoming at the same time. Wide stretches of golden sands and clear Atlantic waters, marry perfectly with colourful sunsets and the exquisite sound of waves crashing against the shoreline.

Located along the Wild Atlantic Way in the North of the county, Ballyheigue is a coastal village about 18km northwest of Tralee. The beach hugs Tralee Bay and forms part of a huge stretch of sandy coastline that links Banna Strand and Barrow Harbour. Ballyheigue combines a Blue Flag beach, dramatic coastal scenery and a relaxed seaside atmosphere that still feels genuinely local – it feels like coming home.

If you are looking for that classic Irish beach experience with fabulous Atlantic views, long sandy walks, surfing, family-friendly facilities and authentic village charm – Ballyheigue Beach in County Kerry deserves a spot on your itinerary.

On clear days you can look out to Tralee Bay, the Dingle Mountains, Kerry Head and Mount Brandon, as you stroll the 3km of uninterrupted coast line.

Its location makes it an ideal stop when exploring:

  • The Wild Atlantic Way
  • North Kerry
  • Tralee Bay
  • Kerry Head
  • The Dingle Peninsula region

Is It Family Friendly?

The village itself is small, welcoming, and built around the beach lifestyle that defines the area. Ballyheigue works especially well for families, as the village is adjacent to the beach front – not far to go for those lovely ice creams!

Do You Have Any Top Tips?

Here are my personal Ballyheigue Beach Travel Tips

  • Visit at sunset for the best coastal views.
  • Check tide times before long walks.
  • Bring a wetsuit if planning water sports outside summer.
  • Combine Ballyheigue with Banna Strand for a full North Kerry beach day.
  • Early mornings are ideal for photography and peaceful walks.

There is something familiar about Ballyheigue. A sense of belonging, stepping away from the business of the towns and cities and into family fun. It feels like home to me, probably because I used to come here as a child and have shared the enjoyment with my own family. If this is the kind of experience you are looking for, I recommend our scenic southwest of Ireland self drive package – we can customise to fit in even more hidden gems that we will be delighted to share with you!
